Job loss and AI-exposed jobs: Q&A with sociology professor Jennie Brand

By Elizabeth Kivowitz

Summary

Jennie Brand, UCLA professor of sociology with an appointment in statistics and data science, is an expert on the socioeconomic effects of job loss. As artificial intelligence transforms the job landscape, Brand and her research partners at the Occupation Lab examine how occupational change — including AI-exposure — affects workers' job mobility. The conversation draws on the team's paper in Science Advances, “Trapped in declining occupations: Barriers to worker mobility in a changing economy,” which found that workers in growing occupations have better prospects for upward mobility than those in declining ones, creating a “mobility trap” for the latter group.
